And while many people say, "We need to spend more money on our schools," there actually isn't a link between spending and student achievement.
Jay Greene, author of "Education Myths," points out that "If money were the solution, the problem would already be solved ... We've doubled per pupil spending, adjusting for inflation, over the last 30 years, and yet schools aren't better."
NJ did not pass its last school budget and as in many states many teachers will be laid off next year and some programs cut. In a country that is already made fun of because of its failing schools, what is a country to do.
Jessica's opinion is this: it is not the schools fault. Quit pointing fingers. Learning happens all day everyday. Not just at school. Maybe if kids came home to a parents that can guide them and help with homework, this may help. Kids are most likely to talk about problems about school when they come home from school, by time a parent gets home from work at 7 the child has pushed it behind them. Teachers feel guilty asking a single mom and/ or working parents to help Timmy with his math facts because everyone is overworked. America has pushed the importance of family out and the importance of economic climbing more important. Second, the morals of some teachers need to rise! (with exceptions of the most perfect teachers like Candice, Peter, Mark ;) I do think there needs to be a revamp of Ameria's Public Schools. In Spain the go to school from 8-5, but they do their extra-curricular during lunch time, so parents are not running here and there after work. There are lots of different ideas. I know that 8-3 is a long day, but what do kids do when they get home, play? What if they do not have supervision?
PS I am sending my kids back to public school next year!

So true! We have one the biggest budgets of any school district in America, yet they can't seem to bring those same schools out of the bottom of everything! Perhaps it is that fact that most of those students have parents that could care less what thier child did at school!
